Data generated by INEC (Ecuadorian Institute of Statistics and Censuses) report that in February 20089, approximately 14 million people inhabit Ecuador.
Relating to the sex of the population can be established that about 49.4% is made up of men and 50.6% for women.
These figures vary even more in favor of women in the provinces of the central highlands of Ecuador. Approximately 54% of the population resides in urban centers, while the rest habit in rural areas.
Guayaquil is the largest city with about 3.8 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area in 2008. It is the pole of concentration of the southern cities of the coast, the main port of Ecuador where entering and leaving about 70% of imports and exports. At the second place is Quito, metropolitan district that counts with 2.400.000 inhabitants being the seat of the government where concentrate are the power of the state. The third largest city, with 450.000 inhabitants is Cuenca.
It was the second capital of the Inca empire and is a major cultural center of the country. Manta remains 300.000 inhabitants after Ambato, Machala, Babahoyo, Santo Domingo, Portoviejo, Loja, Riobamba, Duran, Esmeraldas and Salinas.
