GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
Ecuador is located in the northwestern part of South America, crossed by the equator at which owes its name. The Ecuadorian Amazon region covers an area of 130.000 km with tropical forest vegetation.
The Ecuadorian Amazon although represents just 1.9% of the Amazon basin shared with Venezuela, Guyana, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and Brazil, has the privilege of being in the third place worldwide in amphibian species, forth in birds and reptiles, the fifth in monkeys, sixth plants and flowers, and seventh in mammals.
Ecuador is placed on the equator line, so that its territory is located in both hemispheres. Is comprises two sites far apart: the north – west mainland of South America with some islands adjacent the coast, and the archipelago or Galapagos Islands, located almost 1.000 km from the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.
